Saturday Night Live for Car Lovers

Thursday March 27, 2008

Starting this weekend, Mecum Auction Company and HD Theater will broadcast live the Mecum Auto Auction: Muscle Cars and More, at the Indiana State Fairgrounds in Indianapolis, and will run for six consecutive Saturdays starting March 29 and ending with the grand finale on Saturday, May 17.

Each episode will feature approximately 100 collector cars, live from the auction block as bidders battle for high-end muscle cars, timeless classics and rare exotics. In a press release from the Auction Company, they state that the series will not only profile the amazing cars, eccentric collectors and deal-by-deal auction drama, but also explore the behind the scene process of these high-end automotive auctions, including the crucial evaluation process.

According to Mecum Auction Company’s CEO Dana Mecum,

Mecum Auto Auction: Muscle Cars and More will showcase our highly-spirited automotive auctions, which blend some of the best dramatic elements of sports, reality and game shows. Each auction features real buyers and sellers in a competitive display of bidding prowess, while contemplating the crucial car-by-car question of, What’s it worth?”
We are not big fans of reality shows, like The Biggest Loser, Survivor, or Big Brother, but watching people sweat playing the collector car auction game, trying to stay ambiguous as they get out bid time and time again, is something we can relate to. And since it will be broadcast in high definition, the bidders will really need to wear their poker faces.

HD Theater is part of Discovery's 100-plus worldwide networks led by Discovery Channel, TLC, Animal Planet, The Science Channel, Discovery Health and the Military Channel. The schedule for Mecum Auto Auction: Muscle Cars and More can be found on their website.

I saw this and then I checked and my cable company doesn’t have HD Theater. It will be interesting to see how this auction compares to the other auction that’s televised.
