Best in Show – Pebble Beach 2008

Tuesday August 19, 2008
The foggy and cool morning of the Monterey Peninsula kept entrants in the Pebble Beach Concours d’Elegance quit busy keeping up with the condensation that accumulated on the fine lines and perfection that allowed their cars the privilege of competing on the 18th fairway of the Pebble Beach Golf Links.

1938 Alfa Romeo 8C 2900B Touring Berlinetta One car that seemed to shine the brightest for the judges and won the coveted title of “Best in Show” was the 1938 Alfa Romeo 8C 2900B Touring Berlinetta owned by Jon and Mary Shirley of Medina, Wash.,

Each year the Best of Show award goes to the car, from the pool of Best in Class winners, that receives the most votes from a distinguished panel of automotive judges. This Alfa Romeo made it into the pool by winning the J.B. and Dorothy Nethercutt Most Elegant Closed Car trophy.

The 8C 2900B was Alfa Romeo’s most prestigious grand touring car of the 1930s. Only 33 examples were ever completed for road use, and most were bodied by Carrozzeria Touring. The body on this car was unique, being only one of six privately commissioned Berlinettas, and was used in several advertisements by Alfa.

Was the 1938 Alfa Romeo our choice for Best in Show? There were so many fabulous cars presented we actually couldn't pick just one, and are quite glad we didn’t have to. We've selected some of the cars we thought could be contenders in our Pebble Beach Concours photo gallery.
