If this 1941 Chrysler Newport Dual Cowl Phaeton could talk, oh the stories it could tell. It is said to be the most important piece of history of all prewar Chrysler concept cars, having been honored to pace the 1941 Indianapolis 500 – the last Indy pace car for five years – and become the personal property of Walter P. Chrysler, Jr.
On March 14, 2009, the Chrysler Newport will be on offer at RM’s Automobiles of Amelia Island auction event, and it’s expected to fetch bids reaching seven figures. The car has been carefully maintained and is in remarkably complete and original condition which gained it the acceptance for display at the prestigious Amelia Island Concours d’Elegance which takes place March 15th.
The current owner, who acquired the Newport in 2000 states:
“Always requested for major show, parades and special events, this Chrysler is no doubt the most enjoyable historic car I’ve ever owned. Experiences include running the Laguna Seca track with top executives of Chrysler Corporation for passengers, and heading up Pike’s Peak with Al and Bobby Unser in the back giving me driving tips they used in winning their Championships in America’s second oldest major race up that mountain.”For more information about the Chrysler Concept and the other amazing cars that RM will be bringing to Amelia Island, check out their podcast on the RM website.
