Mecum's Houston Auction 2012

Mecum's Houston Auction 2012

1957 Ford Thunderbird

Mecum Auctions, who has recently organized the world's largest collector car auction in history at their Kissimmee, Florida Auction in January with 2100 cars crossing the auction block, has announced they will hold a two-day auction extravaganza on April 13-14, 2012 at the Reliant Center in Houston, Texas. It will be the company’s inaugural event there and is promising over 600 vehicles all displayed under one roof.

A wide variety of vehicles will cross the auction block that include highlights from longtime Houston businessman and collector Sterling McCall who will be offering 25 cars from his “Old Car Museum”. They include:

Mr. McCall’s love affair with the automobile began as a youngster. During his high school years, he bought cars, fixed them up, and resold them … and even aspired to be a Cadillac dealer someday even though he was going to study law in college. But after researching Toyota, their products, and their success in California, Mr. McCall elected to leave his law practice and get into the retail car business. And the rest, as they say, is history.

In 1970, Sterling McCall opened the first Toyota dealership in Houston. He also opened the first Lexus dealership in Houston in 1989. Honda and Acura dealerships followed. In 1995 Mr. McCall was one of the founders of Group 1 Automotive, a publicly traded company on the New York Stock Exchange. Sterling has particular affection for two of the cars in his current collection: a 1931 Cadillac V12 Roadster, and a 1928 Cadillac 2 Door Doctor’s Coupe. Mr. McCall smiles as he says, “These two cars represent a fantastic era in the history of Cadillac.”

Another well-known Thunderbird collector, Amos Minter who also hails from the Lone Star State, will auction a very nice and award winning 1957 Ford Thunderbird from his personal collection. Did you know that the iconic white 1956 Thunderbird from American Graffiti, a car that has been on our wish list since seeing the movie, was originally red? After checking out Minters bird in Torch Red on Red with matching tonneau top and porthole hardtop, we definitely prefer the red and have adjusted our list accordingly.

For first time collectors or enthusiasts who would like to an affordable addition their stable, we noticed a wide variety of cars in the line-up from which to choose. And they include:

Now if you looking for an affordable classic, that would be great fun as a weekend driver, or that you can take to car shows with pride and have everyone thinking you paid 3 times as much as you did, check out the 1988 Jaguar XJS Cabriolet Mecum has crossing the block on Friday….we will.

The Mecum Houston Auction is open to the general public beginning Friday morning and continues through Saturday. Gates open daily at 8 a.m. Central Time with tickets available at the door for only $15. Discovery’s Velocity Network will broadcast live from The Reliant Center during both days of action.
