Understanding Classified Ads

To us, there is nothing better that spending a Sunday afternoon searching through the classic car classified ads. And, if it’s the week Hemmings arrived in the mail, well that’s just a little bit of heaven.

For the first time classic car buyer, these ads can get a bit frustrating if they don’t understand the full description of a car due to the use of abbreviations. Space is the commodity with advertising; abbreviation and brevity is required to get the most into an ad.

To help you have as much fun as we do; this is a list of the most utilized abbreviations, and their meanings, used in classic car ads.

    2D = 2 Door
    4D = 4 Door
    AC or A/C = Air Conditioned
    AT or A/T = Automatic Transmission
    BRG = British Racing Green
    CID = Cubic Inch Displacement
    CV = Convertible
    F/AC or F/AC = Factory-Installed Air Conditioning
    FHC = Fixed Head Coupe
    FS or F/S = Fender Skirts
    FWD = Front Wheel Drive
    HP = Horsepower
    HT or HDTP = Hardtop
    LHD = Left-Hand Drive
    LWB = Long Wheel Base
    NEG = Price is Negotiable
    NOS = New Old Stock
    NORS= New Old Restored Stock
    OBO = Or Best Offer
    P/ = Prefix Denoting Powered Feature
    PA or P/A = Power Antenna
    PB or P/B = Power Brakes
    PDB = Power Disk Brakes
    PDL or P/L = Power [Door] Locks
    PS or P/S = Power Steering
    SR = Sun Roof
    PT or P/T = Power Top
    PW or P/W = Power Windows
    RHD = Right Hand Drive
    RS or R/S = Rumble Seat
    RT or R/T = Removable Top
    RWD = Rear Wheel Drive
    S/W = Station Wagon
    WB = Wheel Base
