What's is the year, make and model of the car?
1967 Porsche 912
Why did you buy this particular car?
I have this disease, see. It's sort of like hoarding, but somehow we're able to call it collecting since the subject matter is classic cars instead of newspaper clippings.
Where did you find the car?
Long Island, NY
Tell us about your classic.
Most of the cars I've done restoration work on over the years have been Porsche 356s. I've had a couple of 911 models, but my passion has always been with Porsche's original 4-cylinder boxer engine. When I saw this cute 912 pop up for sale, it struck me that I'd never done a 912! After all, many Porsche guys refer to the 912 as the 356D (the lost generation of 356 that followed the 356C). Sadly it needed some rust repair, and was without an engine and transmission. I had just the engine for it laying around, and sourced a 5-speed gearbox for it. A little this, a little that and a lot of elbow grease and it was done!
What do you love most about the car?
I love the look of the first generation 911/912, but one of the neat things about the 912 was its balance -- it is almost perfectly balanced front to rear, and the handling reflects this. While not nearly as fast, it's more nimble than its more powerful big brother, the 911.
Lessons Learned
- My advice to anyone considering even a mild restoration project -- count on spending twice as much money and twice as much time as you originally budget. But in the end it's well worth it!
